23andME

The genetic analysis company 23andMe has been, since 2006, helping people learn about their ethnic and racial background, helping them learn about potential genetic-disease risks, and helping law enforcement catch perpetrators who left a microscopic skin flake behind. In the process, they have gathered a huge trove of genomic data on at least 15 million people.

Now the company is in trouble. It is likely to be sold, which means all that very personal data will soon be up for auction.
