Backpropagation dates from 1986, and
is off-patent now. I don't know if it was ever patented
Generally, the USPTO has held that you can't patent the trained end-system, since it's not really an invention.
Patents: we just got to Benson
On the face of it, Benson says "you can't patent algorithms".
Maybe what it really says is "you have to patent an application of an algorithm, not the algorithm alone". And Benson wasn't even pretending to be doing that.
